Johansson was born in New York City, and was raised by an architect father and producer mother. Her twin brother Hunter were the youngest siblings of four. As a child she was able to begin performing. Actually, at 7 years old, she had already auditioned for a number of commercials. Her interest in acting grew quickly, and she was immediately to the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. Her debut came as an actor in the film North (1994) when she was nine.
